Motorcycle rider fatalities in the United States have increased seven years in a row.

And from 1997 to 2006, more than 33,000 people were killed in crashes. But, despite what you think, the research shows in nearly half of those crashes that the motorcycle rider isn’t at fault.

Compared to yearly totals from 1997, motorcycle fatalities have skyrocketed 125 percent.

In 2006, more than 4,810 people were killed riding motorcycles. 75 percent of those accidents involved collisions with another vehicle.

And, although some people may view those who ride motorcycles as reckless, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that when it comes to crashes involving motorcycles and other vehicles, the driver of the other vehicle is at fault two-thirds of the time.

The study shows that in the majority of the cases, those drivers violated the motorcycle riders’ right of way.

Research also reveals the most likely place for a motorcycle accident to occur is at an intersection.

NHTSA statistics show that helmets saved more than 1,500 motorcyclists’ lives in 2005.

But the scary reality is 728 more lives could have been saved if all motorcyclists had worn helmets.

And safety officials say that helmets are estimated to be 37 percent effective in preventing fatal injuries.

Meaning: for every 100 motorcyclists killed in crashes while not wearing a helmet, 37 percent of them could have been saved had all 100 worn helmets.

The report also shows that the majority of riders involved in accidents had less than 5 months of riding experience.

And, alcohol was involved in nearly half of all motorcycle crashes.
