Determining Your SSD Benefits Payments

Your potential SSD benefits are based on your:

  • age,
  • income,
  • projected date of retirement
  • and work history.

You can use the SSA’s online benefits calculator to help predict your potential SSD payments based on these factors.

SSD Benefits and Health Insurance Coverage

Most SSD recipients become eligible for health insurance coverage under Medicare after 24 months of receiving SSD benefits. The 24-month waiting period begins on your SSD benefit date of entitlement—this is the date you claim your disability began plus 5 months.

Certain severe disabilities such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and end-stage renal disease may qualify you for Medicare as soon as you begin receiving SSD benefits. These types of disabilities are known as compassionate allowances.

You may also be eligible to receive health insurance coverage through Medicaid based on your income and the state where you live. If you’re receiving Supplemental Security Income benefits in addition to SSD benefits, you automatically qualify to receive health coverage through Medicaid.
