The Lyn and Barry Chasen Fund Announces 2010 Scholarship Recipients
Congratulations to this year’s Lyn and Barry Chasen Fund scholarship recipients! Since 1990, annual scholarships have been awarded to graduate students or third or fourth year undergraduate students at the University of Maryland University College (UMUC).
2010 Scholarship Recipients
Barbara Arbiter
After working in the airline industry for many years, Barbara Arbiter returned to school to earn a degree in psychology. She has a passion for helping others and plans to continue her education once her undergraduate degree is complete by attaining a master’s degree in education as well as a Ph.D. with a concentration in school counseling.
Scott Chism
An undergraduate student working toward a degree in information systems management, Scott Chism says that attending UMUC has been a blessing and that he has gained an immense understanding of the business world. When he isn’t attending class, Mr. Chism can be found helping the community through various charity and volunteer projects.
Katherine Cordero
Undergraduate student Katherine Cordero has persevered through many difficult life challenges, which she believes contributed to her true appreciation of her education and future career. In addition to being a business administration student at UMUC, Ms. Cordero works in the property management field and plans to pursue a master’s degree in business administration and complete a dual degree program in financial management.
Frederick Jasper
For the second year, undergraduate student Frederick Jasper has been awarded scholarship funding to pursue his degree in business administration. Mr. Jasper is the first person in his family to attend college and plans on using his degree to excel in his present career.
Jason Vann
Jason Vann grew up in a country where education is not a fundamental right, and, as a result truly values his opportunities to expand his education and professional skills as part of UMUC’s information assurance program. In addition to being an undergraduate student at UMUC, Mr. Vann is a single parent and works for a local company that provides information technology, engineering, and security services.
Amber Voelker
Working toward her bachelor’s degree in psychology, full-time UMUC student Amber Voelker is the first in her family to attend college. Ms. Voelker also is a devoted mother and has worked in the home healthcare industry for several years. She plans on using her degree to focus on obtaining a career in the geriatric field so she can continue to provide care and support to the elderly.
