Two Die, Others Injured in Maryland Auto Accident

August 2, 2011

Police have confirmed that a Maryland auto accident which occurred around 6:30 this morning has taken the lives of two of the people involved. According to NBC-Washington, the crash occurred near Ritchie Marlboro Road along the beltway when, according to police, a series of crashes caused two vehicles to go flying through the air and land on top of several other vehicles. One woman died as a result of a vehicle landing on top of her car, while another man died inside one of the airborne cars. Several victims were transported to local hospitals to be treated for injuries sustained in the accident.

The Maryland auto accident caused several lanes of traffic to be shut down along the Prince George’s County beltway for hours during the morning commute, as authorities began their investigation of the accident. A man was arrested near the scene of the crash, but it has not been verified if his arrest was connected to the incident.

According to the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA), Maryland stands out as one of the leading states in highway safety, with only 529 fatalities on roadways in 2008.

One Killed in Maryland Motorcycle Accident

June 26, 2011

A man died Saturday evening after being involved in a motorcycle accident in Glen Burnie, Maryland. According to a report in The Baltimore Sun, police found the man in a wooded area near the road and pronounced him dead at the scene.

The crash occurred around 6:45PM, after the motorcyclist and two other bikers left The Nabbs Creek Café. They were traveling west on Nabbs Creek Road when an unknown vehicle that was traveling eastbound crossed the center line of the road, approaching the motorcycles head-on. The lead motorcyclist dropped his bike to avoid a collision. The second of the group (the man who was fatally injured) swerved off the roadway and into the woods, and was thrown from his bike. The third biker was injured in his attempt to avoid the car. The man who was killed was not wearing a Department of Transportation (DOT) approved helmet. Police have also indicated that alcohol and speed may have been factors.

According to the Maryland Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Administration, individuals who operate or ride on a motorcycle are required to wear helmets and eye-wear that is certified to meet DOT-established standards. Other suggested protective gear includes leather jackets, long pants, full-fingered gloves, and over-the-ankle boots or shoes.

Texting and Walking: As Dangerous as Texting and Driving?

July 19, 2011

A woman using her phone to text message while walking through a Metro rail station narrowly escaped serious injuriy or death after she tripped and fell onto the rails. As reported by Fox 5 News, the woman was rescued by another passenger who jumped down onto the tracks and lifted her to safety.

The woman was using her phone to send a text message as she got off the escalator to wait for her train, and never saw the edge of the platform. She fell, landing between the first and second rails of the train and narrowly missing the 750-volt third rail. Two other passengers attempted to help her, but weren’t able to reach her position below–one of her shoes was caught in a spoke on the rail and she had twisted her knee in the tumble. A man walking on the upper platform heard the woman’s screams and hastened his pace. After quickly evaluating the scene, he jumped down onto the rails to lift the woman to safety. Medics at the scene assessed the woman’s injuries following the accident.

Metro officials say they routinely see people trip, slip and fall while texting and walking. Metro spokesman Dan Stessel said that people texting while riding the escalators are the most common victims of station accidents, caused by their inattention to surroundings.

The Maryland Pedestrian Accident Lawyers with ChasenBoscolo Injury Lawyers encourage everyone to exercise caution while texting, even if you are just walking. The best way to prevent an accident like this one is for texters to simply stop walking and send their message.

Virginia Motorcyclist Spends 22 Hours in Ditch Before Rescue

July 12, 2011

A 29-year-old Virginia man was involved in a motorcycle crash and spent 22 hours in a roadside ditch before miraculously contacting 911 for help. According to NBC-Washington, the accident occurred near the 234 Bypass in Prince William County on June 30th. The man was driving home from work on his brother’s motorcycle, and was traveling on Bristow Road when he suddenly lost control of the bike. He was thrown into a ditch and knocked out by the force of the accident. When he regained consciousness, he found that he couldn’t move.

The man heard traffic from the nearby road, but was too weakened by his injuries to call loudly enough for help. He found his cell phone, shattered into three separate pieces, and spent the next several hours working to put it back together. As soon as he had a signal, he contacted his brother to tell him he’d crashed the bike. His next call was to 911, who tracked the cell phone signal to determine the man’s location. Emergency rescuers found him and transported him to a local hospital, where he remains while being treated for a broken back, nine broken ribs, and a punctured lung.

Pain Killer Endocet Recalled for Wrong Dosage

July 5, 2011

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), in conjunction with Endo Pharmaceuticals, Inc., issued a recall on the painkiller Endocet late last month when tablets containing higher doses of acetaminophen were found in bottles claiming lower dosages. According to the statement, 100 count bottles of the drug labeled with a 325mg dosage may actually contain pills with a 650mg dosage.

Patients unaware of the problem could face allergic reactions and potential severe liver damage. Doctors with the organization say unintentional administration of tablets with increased acetaminophen content may result in liver toxicity, especially in patients on other acetaminophen-containing medications, patients with liver dysfunction, or people who consume more than 3 alcoholic beverages a day.

Consumers who received an affected product are asked to stop taking the medication immediately and to contact the manufacturer for return information. Also, patients are asked to report any adverse affects from product use to the FDA’s MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting Program. If you have been affected by use of the drug, your next step should be to contact a Washington, D.C. Drug Injury Lawyer with ChasenBoscolo Injury Lawyers, as you may possibly be entitled to compensation for the mistake.

Winchester Drunk Driver Kills Family Of Four

June 28, 2011

Prosecutors for the Commonwealth of Virginia are looking into the possibility of stiffening the charges against an alleged drunk driver who killed a family of four from Stephenson, Virginia, in a car accident.

According to a news clip from WUSA 9 News, the accident occurred at an intersection on Martinsburg Pike and Route 81 in Winchester, Virginia, at 11:00 Sunday morning. The family had stopped at a red light in their 1994 Jeep Cherokee when a 20-year-old driver hit them from behind. The gas tank on the jeep ruptured and the vehicle exploded, killing all four in the vehicle. The young man then attempted to run from the scene of the crash. He was soon caught and his blood alcohol content was registered at a .27, three times the legal limit for of age drivers.

Officers found an empty half-gallon of rum and numerous beer cans in the man’s vehicle. He has two previous underage possession of alcohol tickets on his record and was on probation for possession of marijuana with intent to distribute at the time of the accident.

The father of the woman and grandfather of the children who died said, “And look what he had to do to be in jail, he had to kill my family and that’s not right.”

The Virginia Auto Accident Attorneys with ChasenBoscolo say there are many questions victims of an accident, or their family, may have regarding entitlement to compensation. They can answer your questions confidentially if you fill out a free consultation form.

Two Baltimore Teens Killed In Hit-And-Run Accident

June 21, 2011

TV 11 News reports that police and the state attorney’s office are investigating a hit-and-run accident that claimed the lives of two teenage girls in Baltimore, Maryland. The accident occurred around midnight on Monday of last week at the corner of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and West Pratt Street. The girls, who were 16 and 17-years-old, were crossing the street as they walked home, when the driver of a Lincoln sedan cruised through the intersection and struck the girls, leaving them for dead in the middle of the road. The teens were transported to Shock Trauma, where they were later pronounced dead.

The driver of the Lincoln was later stopped by a Maryland Transportation Authority police officer for a non-related traffic violation. The officer noticed fresh damage on the vehicle and immediately contacted Baltimore police detectives. Authorities questioned the driver and a passenger, but released them. Charges may be brought against the pair later.

Car Accident Injures Police Officer And Driver

June 14, 2011

A downtown car accident has left a Baltimore Police Officer and the driver of another vehicle injured. The Baltimore Sun reported that the incident took place on the 800 block of West Pratt Street around 2:18 AM Sunday morning. The female officer who was involved was driving a marked Chevy Impala police cruiser. As she pulled the car into the intersection at W. Pratt, the driver of a 2002 Ford Crown Victoria T-boned the Impala on the front passenger side.

The officer complained of neck, back, and stomach pain, so emergency crews transported her to the local hospital to be treated for the injuries. The driver of the Crown Victoria also complained of back pain, but refused medical treatment. Authorities are still investigating the cause of the accident.

The injuries these two drivers suffered are all too common following auto accidents. In fact, back and neck pain is reported in a majority of accidents over 10 miles per hour. The common name for such an injury is whiplash. It is caused when muscles and ligaments in the neck and back are thrown forward and snapped backward suddenly. Half of the people who suffer such an injury will continue to experience pain for months following an accident according to a Mayo clinic article.

Toning Tennis Shoes May Cause Injuries

June 7, 2011

A new fashion trend involving the arch-soled, back-end toning tennis shoes, like Sketchers shape-ups, may cause more harm than good. Commercials for the products claim they will get you in shape and fast, but a study by Consumer Reports claims numerous wearers have complained of body pain from the feet to the neck, as well as twists and sprains of ankles and knees, with no toning results. One case in the report told the story of a woman who had them on for less than 45 minutes, when she felt her ankle turn and the bone break.

Orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Joel Buchalter, doesn’t find the results of the study the least bit surprising because, he says, the shoes are designed to create instability. The doctor was quoted as saying, “If you take a patient who is elderly, or someone who has a balance issue, and you put that shoe on them, you’re looking for disaster.”

The American Council on Exercise (ACE) did a study on several of the toning shoes, and found no benefit to them over wearing regular tennis shoes.

Not only is there no benefit to wearing these shoes, they could cause someone wearing them serious harm through the numerous injuries they could incur because of the unbalanced nature of the shoes. If you have been injured because a product didn’t do what it said it would, the Defective Product Attorneys with ChasenBoscolo Injury Lawyers may be able to help.

Tour Bus Crash on I-95 In Virginia Kills Four

May 31, 2011

The Northbound lanes of I-95 in Virginia, near mile marker 104, were closed this morning following an accident involving a commercial tour bus that overturned and has left at least four people dead. The incident occurred just before 5 AM this morning, near the Carmel Church exit in Caroline County. NBC12 is reporting that the bus began to veer off to the right side of the road, the driver then over-corrected causing the bus to flip. Authorities say that 57 passengers were aboard the bus, but there is not an exact count on the number injured. Virginia State Police did confirm that four people had died, and many of the passengers were taken to at least seven hospitals in Fredericksburg and Richmond.

Accidents involving commercial vehicles are much more rare than accidents involving private vehicles, but can have serious ramifications for the driver if injuries or property damage occur. Drivers of commercial vehicles have many restrictions they must obey in order to transport their cargo–whether it is people or crates–safely on the roadways. A violation of these restrictions that caused an accident could put the driver of the commercial vehicle and his company at fault, resulting in them being held responsible for any damages.

There are many regulations on commercial drivers that you may not be aware of. Contact Maryland auto accident attorneys with Chasen Boscolo Injury Lawyers if you have any questions about a accident you were involved in with a commercial vehicle.
