CPSC Website Works To Educate Consumers Of Unsafe Products

March 6, 2012

In today’s age of technology, the Internet has allowed people to access information faster than ever. Now, that technology is being utilized by a website called SaferProducts.gov, which is run by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), to spread the word about unsafe products.

The website relies on the public to post information about defective products they have purchased and the dangers they pose. The information is then sent to the product’s manufacturer and is also evaluated by the CPSC to determine if a recall is needed. The website allows consumers to research products before buying and gives them a chance to look at other consumers’ product experiences.

In the website’s first year, approximately 6,300 posts have been made warning others of dangerous products. The site was also responsible for prompting two recalls, one for a pogo stick that caused children to suffer serious lacerations, and one for an ice cream scooper that had an exploding cap.

CPSC Chairman Inez Tenenbaum stated in a recent interview with NBC 4 News that the site also allows manufacturers to “get notice very quickly if their product is not performing right and if there is a danger and they can act quickly.”

The Washington Defective Product Attorneys with ChasenBoscolo Injury Lawyers believe that this kind of transparency into unsafe products will help keep the public safe from the dangers these products may pose and will help hold manufacturers to a high standard of safety.

Family Of Five In Critical Condition From Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

February 7, 2012

A faulty furnace caused one family of five to be hospitalized early Tuesday morning in Fort Washington, Maryland. According to reports from MY FOX DC, the family is listed in critical condition after suffering from carbon monoxide poisoning in their home.

Doctors were already treating one of the children that morning at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, for what at that time was an unknown condition. They discovered high levels of carbon monoxide in the child’s blood and immediately called for police and rescue units to do a welfare check at the home.

There, police found the other four members of the family unconscious. Helicopters were able to transport the victims to a Baltimore Hospital where they remain under doctor’s care.

Furnaces can easily cause a home to fill with the poisonous gas when combustion gases–or the leftover waste gas from heating your home–does not get properly ventilated out of your home.

To reduce the chances of this happening, make sure flues and chimneys are not blocked, and check for rust and cracks. Soot could also be a sign of combustion leakage.

If a faulty product of some kind has injured you, or a loved one, the Maryland defective product lawyers with ChasenBoscolo Injury Lawyers are here to help you get what you need in order to get back on your feet again. Contact an experienced attorney today.

Three Maryland Residents Poisoned By Carbon Monoxide

November 22, 2011

As the weather cools and we begin to turn the heat on in our homes during chilly nights, we are reminded of the dangers carbon monoxide poses. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says every year, more than 500 deaths and 15,000 trips to the emergency room are on account of unintentional carbon monoxide exposure in the home.

Take the case of the Aspen Hill, Maryland, residents who were listed in critical condition after a gas leak at their apartment complex.  According to ABC 7 News, a faulty furnace in the building was discovered to be at fault for three residents who became ill after gas flooded their units. Rescue units from the Montgomery County Fire Department were dispatched to the scene, where they proceeded to evacuate all other residents and help those harmed by the poisonous gas. Firefighters said carbon monoxide levels had reached 700 parts per million (PPM) in the units–significantly higher than the 35 PPM needed to begin to feel the effects of the gas poisoning the body.

The best way to protect your home from dangerous gas leaks is to install carbon monoxide detectors in each room. The units should be placed within 10-15 feet of all bedroom doors in your home. Also, have furnaces inspected by your gas provider or technician before running the unit each year.

Listeria More Widespread Than Previously Believed

October 11, 2011

The deadly Listeria outbreak that has swept the country in recent months is more rampant than previously believed. Originally, it was thought that the bacterium was spread through tainted cantaloupes farmed out of Colorado; however, according to Channel 11 News, a California grower has issued a recall of chopped and shredded lettuce that was tainted with the microorganism.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and True Leaf Farms issued the recall after random samples tested positive for the bacteria. At first, only 90 cartons of the produce were recalled, but within a very short time, the FDA had expanded the recall to 2,498 cartons. The vegetables were shipped to more than 20 states; including Maryland and two Canadian providences.

Listeria has been blamed for more than 22 deaths since the beginning of the summer. Symptoms of an infection are very similar to the flu, with headaches, muscle aches, fevers and gastrointestinal issues. Normally, an infection is treatable, but those with compromised immune systems, such as babies or the elderly, are at great risk for severe complications that could include death.

This is why the Maryland Defective Product Attorneys with ChasenBoscolo urge families to wash all produce thoroughly before consuming it. Also, when cooking proteins, always ensure that the internal temperature of the cut is between 110-160 degrees Fahrenheit, depending on the meat. This will ensure any contamination is destroyed. Following these tips is the best way to protect yourself, and your loved ones, from becoming ill from food-borne diseases.

Fencing at Apartment Complex a Hazard for Residents

August 16, 2011

Have you ever been stuck somewhere you can’ get out of? It can feel like you are a prisoner and can quickly turn into a nightmare. That is how some residents in a Washington, D.C. apartment complex feel in their own homes sometimes because of a precarious fence that surrounds the complex. The fence may have even been responsible for the death of one resident, leaving others fearing for their own safety and that of their loved ones.

According to an article by NBC-Washington, it was around 2:30 in the morning when one female resident was abruptly awakened by a pounding on her door. She cautiously checked through the peep hole and saw that it was her neighbor. She opened the door and he came spilling into the room covered in blood. The woman immediately called 911 and rescue crews were on their way, but it took the responders extra time to find the one gate leading in and out of the vast apartment complex. By the time they made it to the victim, he had bled to death.

Several residents reported their cards stopping working, thus locking them in buildings and within the gate’s walls, prompting fears of the outcome if a fire was to break out and their card stopped working. Residents have since petitioned management for better fencing and access in and out of gates on the property.

The Washington, D.C. Defective Product Attorneys with ChasenBoscolo may be able to help you if you too have been injured, like these residents, because of a product malfunction at no fault of your own. Contact them for a free consultation of your case.

Winchester Drunk Driver Kills Family Of Four

June 28, 2011

Prosecutors for the Commonwealth of Virginia are looking into the possibility of stiffening the charges against an alleged drunk driver who killed a family of four from Stephenson, Virginia, in a car accident.

According to a news clip from WUSA 9 News, the accident occurred at an intersection on Martinsburg Pike and Route 81 in Winchester, Virginia, at 11:00 Sunday morning. The family had stopped at a red light in their 1994 Jeep Cherokee when a 20-year-old driver hit them from behind. The gas tank on the jeep ruptured and the vehicle exploded, killing all four in the vehicle. The young man then attempted to run from the scene of the crash. He was soon caught and his blood alcohol content was registered at a .27, three times the legal limit for of age drivers.

Officers found an empty half-gallon of rum and numerous beer cans in the man’s vehicle. He has two previous underage possession of alcohol tickets on his record and was on probation for possession of marijuana with intent to distribute at the time of the accident.

The father of the woman and grandfather of the children who died said, “And look what he had to do to be in jail, he had to kill my family and that’s not right.”

The Virginia Auto Accident Attorneys with ChasenBoscolo say there are many questions victims of an accident, or their family, may have regarding entitlement to compensation. They can answer your questions confidentially if you fill out a free consultation form.

Toning Tennis Shoes May Cause Injuries

June 7, 2011

A new fashion trend involving the arch-soled, back-end toning tennis shoes, like Sketchers shape-ups, may cause more harm than good. Commercials for the products claim they will get you in shape and fast, but a study by Consumer Reports claims numerous wearers have complained of body pain from the feet to the neck, as well as twists and sprains of ankles and knees, with no toning results. One case in the report told the story of a woman who had them on for less than 45 minutes, when she felt her ankle turn and the bone break.

Orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Joel Buchalter, doesn’t find the results of the study the least bit surprising because, he says, the shoes are designed to create instability. The doctor was quoted as saying, “If you take a patient who is elderly, or someone who has a balance issue, and you put that shoe on them, you’re looking for disaster.”

The American Council on Exercise (ACE) did a study on several of the toning shoes, and found no benefit to them over wearing regular tennis shoes.

Not only is there no benefit to wearing these shoes, they could cause someone wearing them serious harm through the numerous injuries they could incur because of the unbalanced nature of the shoes. If you have been injured because a product didn’t do what it said it would, the Defective Product Attorneys with ChasenBoscolo Injury Lawyers may be able to help.

Potentially Dangerous Children’s Medicine Pulled from Shelves

October 12, 2007

Among growing criticism of children’s cough and cold remedies, many drug makers are pulling their products from store shelves, saying that they are concerned that parents and caregivers may be incorrectly administering the medicine to young children. Some medical professionals question the effectiveness of these medicines for children under 2, and they asked the Food and Drug Administration to not permit these potentially harmful drugs for children under 6 to be sold.

During the past six years, four Baltimore children’s deaths have been linked to these potentially harmful cough and cold drugs, according the Baltimore Sun. Additionally, almost 90,000 calls were placed during 2005 regarding overdoses or dangerous reactions in children who had used cough or cold medicines.

Possible Dangerous Drug Side Effects Triple

The diabetes drug Avandia has been linked to a high rate of heart problems in those who take the medication, says an article published today in the Washington Post. According to the article, this potentially dangerous drug can raise the risk of heart attack by 43 percent. Used to treat Type 2 diabetes, Avandia has come under scrutiny during the past few months, and some physicians are requesting that the FDA better track possible drug complications and require physicians to report adverse effects in their patients.

Defective product leads to fatal automobile accidents

July 11, 2007

Chrysler was ordered to pay a settlement to a family after a child was killed by a Chrysler-made vehicle, according to an article in the Atlanta Constitution Journal. A 4-year-old boy was able to shift the 1997 Plymouth Voyager out of park while the engine was turned off, which caused the van to roll over and kill the boy’s 18-month-old brother. Newer Chrysler models include a mechanism that prevents gears from shifting when engines are not in use, however, the 1997 model did not include this $9 part. Chrysler has made no attempt to recall the models, approximately 9 million vehicles, that do not have this potentially life-saving part.
