New Fire Training Center Proposed to Help Battle Maryland Fire Injuries

November 13, 2007

Carroll County commissioners met today to discuss a second possible site to build a new fire training center. Currently, the only training center is located on a 40-acre plot of land on McKinstry’s Mill Road. Residents who live near the area have raised concerns regarding the site in addition to sewer sanitary issues associated with the site.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, on average in the United States in 2006, someone died in a fire about every 162 minutes, and someone was injured every 32 minutes. Additionally, four out of five U.S. fire deaths in 2005 occurred in homes. The best way to prevent Maryland fire and burn injuries is to have a working smoke alarms throughout a house and test them every six months.

Harsh Restrictions of Pit Bulls Due to Potential Maryland Dog Bite Injuries Denied

October 16, 2007

Last night, the Baltimore County Council was asked to consider enforcing some of the strictest guidelines for pit bulls and their owners. The restrictions—which required pit bull owners to keep their dogs in concrete-based kennels and post warning signs on their lawns—were ultimately denied by the council.

While the measures were considered to address ways to prevent Maryland dog bite attacks, many animal rights activists said that these rules were unfair. They said the problem is dangerous animals, not a specific breed of dog. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention does state, however, that pit bulls were responsible for more dog bite-related attacks than any other breed.

Potentially Dangerous Children’s Medicine Pulled from Shelves

October 12, 2007

Among growing criticism of children’s cough and cold remedies, many drug makers are pulling their products from store shelves, saying that they are concerned that parents and caregivers may be incorrectly administering the medicine to young children. Some medical professionals question the effectiveness of these medicines for children under 2, and they asked the Food and Drug Administration to not permit these potentially harmful drugs for children under 6 to be sold.

During the past six years, four Baltimore children’s deaths have been linked to these potentially harmful cough and cold drugs, according the Baltimore Sun. Additionally, almost 90,000 calls were placed during 2005 regarding overdoses or dangerous reactions in children who had used cough or cold medicines.

Mandatory Sprinklers to Prevent Maryland Fire Injury

September 14, 2007

New homes in Anne Arundel County may be required to have fire sprinklers. According to the Maryland State Fireman’s Association, some new homes are not built to withstand fire as well as some older homes. As a result, having mandatory sprinklers installed in new homes may decrease the chances of residents experiencing serious Maryland fire and burn injuries in a fire. Some house developers, however, say that installing sprinklers is not cost-effective—a sprinkler system could add up to $20,000 to the cost of a house. Additionally, if a sprinkler is accidentally triggered, it could cause serious water damage.

Expert Says Popcorn Fumes May Cause Lung Disease

September 5, 2007

While popcorn is an American favorite, the butter-flavored chemical used on this staple food may be causing a severe lung condition, bronchiolitis obliterans. According to a physician at the National Jewish Medical and Research Center, the chemical, also known as diacetyl, does not post harm when ingested, however, breathing the diacetyl fumes may prove to be very dangerous.

Earlier this year, a man was diagnosed with a rare lung disease that is typically associated with people who work in food-flavor factories. This man, however, didn’t work in that type of environment. Instead, he ate about two bags of popcorn a day, inhaling the diacetyl fumes on a regular basis.

Some physicians and experts in occupational and environmental health are pushing for stronger health regulations and urging manufacturers to stop using diacetyl in their products. Some popcorn producers say they will stop using the chemical in their products.
