Automakers Meet With DOT To Discuss Reducing Distracted Driving Risks

March 13, 2012

The National Highway Transportation and Safety Administration estimates that 20 percent of all vehicle crashes resulting in injuries and 16 percent of all fatal crashes were attributed to distractions, such as GPS devices or cellphones. These estimates rose six percent over a four year time period.

In an effort to help curb these numbers, four major automakers met with Department of Transportation officials Monday to discuss new technologies that may help prevent drivers from becoming distracted. ABC 7 News reports that executives from BMW, Mercedes, Nissan, and General Motors were all in attendance at the meeting.

The hot topic of discussion at the meeting was new and improved guidelines for in-car devices that would eliminate a driver’s need to type an address into a GPS unit as well as block a driver from browsing the Internet.

Currently, most in-dash devices require an average of 10 glances, each averaging around two seconds, to process the information. Automakers are hoping to reduce that average to six glances.

“We need to take steps to prevent them from doing something that would take their mind, their eyes, and their hands off the task,” said Tom Bologa, a spokesman for BMW of North America.

The Washington DC Car Accident Lawyers with ChasenBoscolo Injury Lawyers would like to remind motorists that texting while driving is illegal within the district and is never worth the fines and risk for potential accidents and injuries.

VDOT Policy Changes Make Roads Safer For Bikers

October 25, 2011

Many of Virginia’s citizens cite the reason for not biking or walking as part of their daily commute as being too few accommodating lanes and sidewalks, and the dangers associated with walking or biking in the main road. Now, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) is working to change that with a complete revamping of the state’s future transportation plan to include and accomodate cyclists and pedestrians.

According to ABC 7 News, the department reported earlier this week that it had completed the first of a three-part series of measures that draws vision and goals for their 2011 State Bicycle Policy Plan. The main intention of the plan is to encourage more biking in the state by changing the infrastructure of the road system to be better suited for bikers. Some of the changes called for in the policy include providing additional staffing and resources to meet the needs of bikers at sponsored projects and programs, improving outreach and coordination with the biking community, and clarifying bicycle accommodation policies.

The Virginia Bicycle Accident Lawyers with ChasenBoscolo would applaud the state’s agencies for working hard to make the states roads safer for walkers, bikers, and drivers alike, but also know more must be done. What are some other changes that need to be made in order to provide bikers and walkers with a safer way to commute? Tell us what you think by posting to our Facebook page.

D.C. Officials to Give Away 500 Bicycle Helmets

August 9, 2011

According to the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), riders’ proper use of bicycle helmets could eliminate one death per day or one head injury every 4 minutes in the U.S. That is one reason why officials in the District of Columbia are giving away some 500 bicycle helmets in the coming months. Officials hope to boost helmet use within the district, where riders over the age of 16 are not currently required to wear them.

According to 9 News Now, the helmets will be given to members of the Capital Bikeshare program, an organization with roughly 1,100 bikes for rent at 110 locations throughout the Washington, D.C. and Arlington area. Citizens can join the group for a mere $75 per year, allowing them to access the bicycles any time for transportation throughout the area. The district hopes the campaign will promote rider safety awareness. If successful, the district plans to purchase 500 more helmets to donate to the group’s thousands of members.

The Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute reports that as many as 2,500 riders’ lives are saved by the use of bicycle helmets. Rider education and use is at the heart of this campaign.

The Washington Bicycle Accident Attorneys with ChasenBoscolo encourage cyclists of all ages to wear a helmet for protection while riding. It is the only line of defense from the serious harm that can be inflicted on riders during a crash.
